Birding adventure in waigeo.

This short trip targets the iconic Red Bird of paradise and the elusive Wilson's Bird of paradise, These two iconic birds of Waigeo Island perform their unique displays in the morning; therefore, viewing the Red Bird of Paradise and Wilson's Bird of Paradise requires an early start. Accompanied by a local guide from Waigeo, you will trek through the forest, listening to the sounds of birds and insects, and occasionally encountering reptiles and mammals.

The excursion to see the Red Bird of Paradise takes place in the morning because the journey from the parking area to the observation point—or "hide"—requires a hike of approximately 30 to 45 minutes. As these birds prefer high ground or hilly terrain, the trek involves a somewhat strenuous climb. The Red Bird of Paradise typically begins calling to females between 6:10 AM and 7:00 AM, so arriving early allows you to settle in and wait for their calls to begin.

Viewing the Wilson's Bird of Paradise is best done in the morning, as the trek from the parking area to the observation point—or "hide"—takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Unlike the Red Bird of Paradise, the Wilson's Bird of Paradise prefers lower elevations or smaller trees and often spends time on the forest floor. It is a unique bird characterized by dominant red plumage, accented with yellow, black, metallic blue, and touches of white. It frequently clears away scattered leaves and twigs from the ground; sometimes, it even knocks leaves down from the trees itself before tidying them up. The males typically begin calling out to females between 6:00 and 8:00 AM, so arriving early is advantageous while waiting for them to vocalize. The females are brown, whereas the males display much more striking coloration.

Malagufuk Village is a nature tourism destination rich in flora and fauna, home to five species of birds of paradise as well as various reptiles, mammals, and insects. The journey from Sorong to Malagufuk Village takes approximately one hour and forty-five minutes to reach the car park; from there, you must walk about two kilometers along a wooden walkway to reach the village itself. Along the way, you will hear the calls of diverse bird species and have the opportunity to observe and photograph them. Homestay accommodation is available in the village, though specific units cannot be selected or pre-booked, as the community operates a rotational schedule for guests.
